Record users, shrinking core, and $2,195 glasses

More people open Snapchat every day than ever, but its most valuable users, in North America, are leaving, and the company's answer is a pair of AR glasses priced at $2,195. We read the filings for three things the headlines hide: where the users are, a billion-dollar cost that never touches cash, and why shareholders get no vote.

The breakdown

Can the app make cash faster than the glasses burn it?

Snap's turnaround is real: free cash flow, a fast-growing subscription line and better monetization abroad. The question is whether that cash outruns a shrinking North American audience, about $1 billion a year of stock pay and an expensive bet on AR glasses that shareholders can't vote on.

  1. A camera company, run by its founders.

Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy started Snapchat as students in 2011. The Class A shares the public owns carry no votes, and the two co-founders control over 99% of the voting power, and Spiegel alone can control a majority.

  2. Ads pay the bills, and Apple changed the rules.

Advertising was about 87% of revenue in 2025. After Apple's app-tracking change made ad results harder to measure, Snap lost $1.32 billion in 2023. Snap rebuilt its ads around direct-response formats.

  3. The turnaround on paper.

2025 revenue grew 11% to $5.93 billion, the net loss shrank from $698 million to $460 million, and free cash flow doubled to $437 million. Q4 2025 brought a $45 million net profit, and Q1 2026 revenue rose 12% with $286 million of free cash flow.

  4. What the record user count hides.

North American daily users fell from 100 million to 92 million between Q4 2024 and Q1 2026, and Europe slipped too. Rest of World reached 294 million, about 61% of the total (our arithmetic), but it earned $1.20 per user in Q1 2026 against $9.23 in North America.

  5. The billion-dollar cost that never touches cash.

Adjusted EBITDA was $689 million in 2025, but it leaves out $1.02 billion of stock-based compensation. Paid in cash instead, that would turn $437 million of free cash flow into a loss of more than half a billion (our arithmetic). Meanwhile subscriptions grew fast: Other Revenue rose 62% to $232 million in Q4 2025, with 24 million subscribers.

  6. The glasses bet.

Snap unveiled SPECS on June 16, 2026: see-through AR glasses at $2,195, weighing 132 or 136 grams, shipping this fall in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Owning its own device would make Snap the landlord instead of a tenant on someone else's phone.

Two endings

Where this could go

The bull case

The cash machine works.

  • Free cash flow went from $35 million to $437 million in two years.
  • Subscriptions grow much faster than ads and cushion bad ad quarters.
  • Monetization abroad is rising: European revenue per user jumped 48% year over year in Q1 2026.
The bear case

The glasses eat the cash.

  • The most valuable users are shrinking in the market worth roughly eight times more per user.
  • About $1 billion a year of stock pay keeps diluting holders while Snap still loses money under GAAP.
  • Snap is a defendant in a federal multidistrict case over teen social media use (allegations, not findings), and Meta and Apple can outspend it on hardware.

Scenarios, not predictions. Not financial advice.

How we researched this

Figures are stated as the filings support them. The 61% share of users, the 7–8 users to replace one North American user, and the free cash flow after stock pay are our own arithmetic. The narration said Snapchat+ has more than 25 million subscribers; the latest filing we cite reports 24 million subscribers in Q4 2025. The film uses Q1 2026 user data, which was the latest regional breakdown in our research.

Not from filings: Facebook's reported 2013 offer, Meta's 3 billion monthly users, S&P's index rules on non-voting shares, the February 2024 one-day stock drop, the June 2026 S&P credit upgrade, the WaveOptics price, the AR developer and Lens counts, the TikTok overlap and age-mix figures, and the reported 100,000-unit first SPECS run. Those came from news, company marketing and our research at the time, and are dated.
